How colored text works in Discord

Discord has no color button, but it colors text inside a code block marked ansi. Invisible ANSI escape codes in the text switch the color on and off: 1 is bold, 4 underline, 30 to 37 are the eight text colors and 40 to 47 the eight backgrounds. The escape character can't be typed on a keyboard, which is why you copy it from a generator like this one. The message shows in a code-block box, in a monospaced font.

How do I send colored text in Discord?
Write and style your message above, press Copy for Discord, then paste it into the message box and send it. Paste it exactly as copied: the ```ansi line at the start and the ``` at the end are what make Discord show the colors.
Does colored text work on phones?
The colors show in the Discord app for Windows, Mac and Linux and in Discord in a web browser. The phone apps may show the same message as plain text in a code block.
How many colors can I use?
Eight text colors and eight background colors, which you can combine with each other and with bold and underline. Those 16 colors, bold and underline are what Discord shows in colored code blocks.
Why does my message look like strange symbols?
The colors only work inside a code block that starts with ```ansi. If you paste just part of it, or edit the escape codes by hand, Discord shows the codes as text. Copy the whole block again.
Can a Discord bot send colored text?
